In the old days people would douse the rings in oil, then came ATF, WD-40, and now there's dry lube for better ring seating. Everyone seems to have their own formula but what you'll find in common is they all meticulously clean the bores and use the least amount of lubricant. After that I really don't think there's a difference breaking in an engine hard or easy. Pick whichever makes you happy.
